Experience
There are people that will bring up the fact that I have no experience in elected public office, and those people would be correct. I would like to ask you a question: Have you ever been searching for a job and applied to one that you knew that you were qualified for, and were perfectly capable of doing, and yet you got turned down, or possibly did not even get an interview? And the reason for that is that you did not have experience? I have had that “experience” many times. It has made me ask “How am I supposed to get experience if you will not hire me?” There is a first time for everything. Every elected official got elected the first time and I would like for you to make this my first time.
I do not have experience in elected public office, this is true. However, let me tell you about the experience that I do have. Let me go back all the way to the beginning. I have experience picking strawberries, delivering newspapers, bussing tables and washing dishes. I have experience in construction, warehousing, shipping and receiving, printing, and inside and outside sales. I have experience as a fiberglass laminator and administrative assistant. I worked at the Miller Brewery in Tumwater and Wilcox Farms in Roy. And finally, I have spent the last ten years, nine at Tumwater Middle School, as a teacher of seventh graders.
Let me tell you about other types of experience. I have experience in not having health insurance and not being able to afford to go to the doctor when I was sick. I have experience in being in debt because of student loans and not knowing if I was going to be able to pay all my bills each month. I have experience in feeding a family of three on $40 a week. I have survived and even thrived through all of my experiences and now I want to take my experience and help our country solve our problems.
I have real life experience, the same experiences that us working class people have every day. I know what the average person goes through because I am the average person and I feel that most politicians are totally out of touch with what real Americans are actually experiencing. And judging from the way our country has been run by the “experienced” politicians in Washington D.C. today, I am not too sure experience in politics is a necessary quality. It might even be a hindrance.
